ANIMO = spirit, mind, emotion, intent, feeling. For both Sarah Waycott, flautist and Yanna Zissiadou, pianist, music should come from the soul, it should be free from classifying labels – Western Classical, Baroque, Contemporary – and enjoyed for what it is: ‘just music’. It’s an attitude that, since their 2019 launch, has been garnering a word-of-mouth following: “extraordinary” and “magical” are the adjectives most frequently used to describe their performances, which are
designed around rich content and virtuoso technique. Their commitment to playing works by living composers is matched by their desire to de-mystify the world of contemporary classical music, to ‘declassify’ it. So, if ‘new’ music isn’t your thing, then ANIMO’S innovative approach might just be the concert to change your mind.
